“Revisions” was the photographic series that I made as a follow-up to “Artifacts“. There was a little overlap between the two. Method-wise, I was still projecting art history slides from the slide library on to people and photographing them.
For “Revisions”, I moved away from the source material of classical antiquities of Egypt, Rome, and Athens, and on to artworks done in the 19th and 20th century. For the first time I was projecting paintings on my models – images of works by Ingres and Matisse, predominantly. I was also projecting Neoclassical busts from the 1800s and some background images of landscapes from that same time frame. I was mixing and matching. It was really nice to have bright colors in the images, after the mostly marble and bronze sculptures of the ancient times.
It was interesting to me that I was using mostly two-dimensional images (paintings), projecting them onto three-dimensional people and backgrounds, and creating new two-dimensional images when I photographed these scenes.
I also did a few experimental works projecting 20th century photography – Man Ray/Lee Miller, Mapplethorpe, Weston, etc. – onto the model.
