Artist Statement

With Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), I wanted to create a body of work that felt like the 1980s but without necessarily looking like it was made during the 80s. I sought to capture a vibe, a moment in time, when music and culture were exciting and even a little dangerous. Most pieces in the exhibition are titled with a reference to a song or album from the punk/new wave/no wave era, roughly the late 1970s to late 80s. The artworks are not meant to be illustrations of the songs, but rather evoke feelings that sync with the music.

Visually, the work is informed by punk and new wave graphics, which themselves were greatly influenced by the Pop Art movement and the French New Wave cinema of the 50s and 60s.

The source images for these works are photos that I took in the 80s; however, all the pieces displayed were completed in 2023.
